Unfortunately after 8 successful years, the management at the Virgin Active gym have decided to discontinue the kids’ Kempo classes, as they want to make their offering across clubs consistent. I am looking for alternatives to Virgin but so far no luck, so for the time being there will be no more classes. Please watch this space for further news however as I still hope to find another venue nearby.
Some of you may have been wondering where Sensei Rob and Jonathan were the past two weeks. Every year the BSKF runs a special training seminar in Cyprus for black belts. At this week long event, the BSKF chief instructor Sensei Mizuno focuses on advanced technical training, as well as giving advice on how to become better teachers. Both Sensei Rob and Jonathan attended, along with several other black belts from City Dojo in London, and many others from other UK and international branches.
These events are a great opportunity to train with new faces, as well as renew bonds with old friends. Everyone attending had an excellent time, and learnt a great deal from the whole experience. Now Sensei Rob and Jonathan can bring these new insights back and pass them on to all of their students.
There is absolutely no reason why anyone currently training at Angel dojo couldn’t one day obtain their black belt, and attend events like this. Keep training hard, have fun, and one day you too could be a future sensei!
We hope you had a good time training with Alice and Guy, and look forward to seeing you all in the dojo soon!
In other news, the format of Sensei Rob’s YMCA children’s classes have slightly changed. There are now two separate classes, Wednesdays, 4:15pm-5pm for children aged 5 to 8, and 5pm-6pm for children aged 8 and over. Please see YMCA Class for more details.
Come and try Sensei Rob’s exciting new Kempo Fitness class at the Central YMCA near Tottenham Court Road. An hour long class consisting of intense cardio workouts, including padwork, self defence drills and much more. If that’s not enough, stay for the second hour consisting of more advanced techniques of Shorinji Kempo.
The first class is this Wednesday 3rd July 2013, 7-8pm (Kempo Fitness) followed by 8-9pm (Kempo Technique). For more information and directions see http://www.kempofitness.co.uk/ or visit our facebook page.
Sensei Rob has updated the Junior’s syllabus, and you can get a copy here.
It is important that kenshi are familiar with their techniques, including the Japanese names. If there are any questions, please see an instructor before or after a class.
Recently Sensei Rob visited the Corca Dhuibhne branch of the ISKF, to conduct a grading and also hold a training seminar. Sensei Rob and one of his assistants from City Kempo dojo were treated to Irish hospitality and a good time was had by all.
Angel Kempo dojo will be holding a series of gradings soon, so watch this space for news of grading success closer to home!
Sensei Rob has started a new Children’s class at the Tottenham Court Road YMCA. The class is after school on Wednesdays at 4:30pm.
Parents wanting more information or to sign up should contact the YMCA Reception on 020 7343 1700 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
We look forward to seeing kenshi, new and old, at the YMCA.
Next Saturday (7th April 2012) there will be no class due to the Easter holiday.
Sensei Rob and his assistants would like to congratulate Lara, for passing her 3rd Kyu grading. Lara becomes Angel Dojo’s first green belt. Only three more gradings till black belt, Lara!
After the Easter holiday there will be another round of gradings, so watch this space for news. For those who are grading, the website has some good resources, you can download a copy of the syllabus here, read up about the stances you need to know, brush up on vocabulary. Remember, kenshi above the age of seven grading for green tip and above, will need to know how to tie their own belt, there is no time like the present to learn!
City Kempo Dojo is organising a martial arts demonstration at their training venue at City University. All are welcome to come and watch, and maybe even give the class a go. Sensei Robert Villiers is organising the demonstration and it will include examples of Embu (paired practise), Randori (sparring), Chinkon (meditation), and both Goho (Hard) and Juho (soft) waza (techniques). Sensei Rob will be performing an embu with Sensei Martin Dixon of SOAS dojo, and there will also be a demonstration of shakujo (quarterstaff) techniques.
Time & Date : 7:30-8:30pm Monday 30th December
Location : Martial Arts Room, Lower Ground Floor,
City University Main Building,
London EC1V 0HB
There will be people by the entrance to the Drysdale Building to give you directions to the Martial Arts Room. If you think you might be interested in giving it a go, wear loose clothing appropriate for e.g. a gym workout, there will be an opportunity at the end of the demo to try out some techniques!

Happy new year! Welcome to 2012 and welcome back to Kempo at Angel Dojo. I hope everybody is refreshed and ready to meet the challenges of the new year. We had our first class of the year last week, and it was good to see so many of you back and ready to learn.
There will be gradings coming up soon, so make every effort to attend and practise your techniques. With any luck the dojo will soon be a much more colourful place as we get more tags on belts, and more full coloured belts. All it takes to make it to the next grade is to keep on attending and giving your best effort.
And on the topic of gradings, congratulations are due to Sensei Rob for passing his 5th Dan grading! This is a phenomenal achievement and means that Sensei Rob is one of the highest graded instructors in the UK!
